The Ultimate High School Senior Photo Session Prep Timeline
Senior year goes by fast. Between school, sports, and soaking in the final months before graduation, it’s easy to feel like everything’s happening all at once. If you’re planning high school senior photos in Greenville or Spartanburg, having a pre photo session prep timeline can help take the stress out of the process — and ensure your session feels relaxed and fun.
As a Spartanburg and Greenville senior photographer, I’ve helped families prep for sessions that feel both effortless and personal. This timeline breaks down exactly what to do and when, so your teen shows up confident, polished, and ready to shine in front of the camera.

1 Month Before Your Session
Book Hair Appointments
Get your haircut or color taken care of now. If you’re trying something new, this gives time to adjust if needed. A trim or touch-up is often all that’s needed to freshen things up.
Test Spray Tans or Self-Tanner
If you’ve never had a spray tan or tried self-tanner, now is the time to experiment. This gives your skin time to adjust and ensures no surprise streaks or undertones right before the session.
Focus on Skincare, Sleep, and Water
Hydrated skin and well-rested eyes go a long way in portraits. Start building in a little extra sleep and drinking more water now.
Start Planning Outfits
Lay out what fits well and flatters your senior’s style and personality. Still figuring it out? Head over to Wardrobe Tips for High School Senior Photos for a full breakdown.
Create a Mood Board
Use Pinterest or a shared album to collect inspiration — from poses and colors to locations and outfits. Share your ideas with me before your session so we’re aligned.

2 Weeks Before Your Session
Finalize Outfits and Accessories
Try on every outfit from head to toe. Check that it fits well, layers nicely, and feels comfortable to move in. Look for details like undergarment lines and shoe choices.
Book Nail, Hair Styling, and Brow Appointments
This is the perfect time to shape brows, get a fresh manicure, and lock in any final salon appointments.
Review Your Session Plan
I’ll send over final details including your session time, location, and what to bring. You can also browse Senior Photo Locations in Upstate SC if you need a little location inspiration.
1 Week Before
Trim or Shape Hair
Now is a good time for a final clean-up trim or shaping of facial hair.
Steam or Iron Clothes
Prep everything to hang wrinkle-free. Using garment bags is helpful if you’re bringing multiple looks to your session.
2–3 Days Before
Get Nails Done
Opt for something clean and neutral. French tips, soft pinks, or even just clean buffed nails always look polished.

Pack an Emergency Kit
Include safety pins, fashion tape, hair ties, blotting paper, makeup touch-ups, and a brush.
Prep Props
Planning to include meaningful items like sports gear, instruments, or pets? This is a great time to gather those. For more ideas, visit The Best Props to Bring to Your High School Senior Session.
1 Day Before
Lay Everything Out
Outfits, accessories, shoes, props — organize everything the night before. It’ll save you from any last-minute stress.
Hydrate and Eat Light
Stay away from salty, high sugar foods, sodas and make sure you’re still drinking lots of water.
Get a Full Night’s Sleep
Try to wind down early so you feel well-rested and fresh for the session.
The Morning of Your Session
Go Easy on Skincare and Makeup
Keep it simple — a gentle cleanser, light moisturizer, and minimal product is best. If you opted for professional makeup, arrive with a clean face.
Pack Your Essentials
Bring your emergency kit, backup outfits if needed, and any last-minute touch-up items.
Come With Confidence
I’ll guide every pose, adjust every detail, and help your senior feel comfortable from the start.
