The Best Props to Bring to Your High School Senior Session (And Why!)

Senior photos are all about capturing who you are at this exciting stage of life. While beautiful portraits alone can tell part of your story, adding props can help show your unique personality, interests, and passions. Whether you’re an athlete, musician, artist, or just want to highlight what makes you you, here are some of the best props to bring to your senior session and why they matter.

1. Sports Gear & Jerseys

If you’ve spent your high school years on the field, court, or track, incorporating sports-related props is a great way to honor your dedication. Bring:

  • Your jersey or letterman jacket
  • A basketball, football, soccer ball, etc.
  • Cleats, dance shoes, or running spikes
  • A baseball glove or bat
  • Medals, trophies, or championship rings

2. Musical Instruments

Music is a major part of many seniors’ lives, whether in band, choir, or as a hobby. Bring:

  • Guitar, violin, saxophone, or any instrument you play
  • Sheet music
  • A microphone for vocalists

📍 Example Shot: Strumming your guitar in a natural setting, holding your instrument with a city skyline behind you, or singing into a mic for dramatic flair.

3. Books, Notebooks & Laptops

For book lovers, writers, and academic achievers, books can add a sophisticated and intellectual feel to your photos. Bring:

  • A stack of your favorite books
  • A laptop or journal
  • A graduation cap for a “next chapter” vibe

📍 Example Shot: Sitting on a blanket reading, tossing a graduation cap in the air, or journaling in a coffee shop.

4. Hobbies & Interests

Whether you love painting, hiking, gaming, or fashion, your session should be about what brings you joy. Bring:

  • Paintbrushes, a sketchpad, or art supplies
  • A skateboard or BMX bike
  • A camera if you love photography
  • A gaming controller or headphones

📍 Example Shot: Holding your paintbrushes with a colorful backdrop, skateboarding at a local park, or leaning on your camera for a behind-the-scenes look.

5. Your Car or Bike

If your car or truck is part of your high school experience, why not include it in your session? It’s a perfect way to mark your independence and achievements.

📍 Example Shot: Sitting on the hood of your car, driving your trick through mud, or capturing a cinematic shot on an open road.

6. Your Pet

Bringing a dog, cat, or other pet can make your session even more personal and fun. Just make sure to bring a friend or family member to help handle your pet between shots.

📍 Example Shot: Walking your dog through a park, holding a small pet, or cuddling with them on a blanket.

7. Graduation Elements

While your senior session is about celebrating your journey before graduation, it’s also great to include items that mark this transition. Bring:

  • Your cap and gown
  • A “Class of 2025” sign
  • College gear for where you’re headed next

📍 Example Shot: Throwing your cap in the air, writing “Class of 2025” in chalk, or wearing a college hoodie to showcase your next step.

8. Ice Cream, Coffee, or Snacks

Want to add a fun, relaxed vibe? Bring your favorite drink or snack, whether it’s coffee, bubble tea, or ice cream from your go-to shop.

📍 Example Shot: Sipping coffee downtown, laughing with a milkshake in hand, or enjoying a casual ice cream cone on a summer evening.

9. Something Sentimental

Sometimes the most meaningful props aren’t flashy—they’re personal. Think about:

  • A necklace from a loved one
  • A childhood stuffed animal
  • A handwritten letter or note

📍 Example Shot: Holding an old family heirloom, flipping through childhood photos, or a close-up of a sentimental item in your hands.

How to Choose the Right Props for You

Not sure what to bring? Ask yourself:

  • What has been a major part of my high school experience?
  • What hobbies or passions define me?
  • What items make me feel most me?

Your senior photos should feel authentic—so if a prop doesn’t resonate, don’t feel like you have to bring one. The best images happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourself.
