Feeling awkward in front of the camera? You’re not alone. Most high school seniors step into their photo session with a mix of excitement and nerves — and that’s completely normal.
But here’s the secret: you don’t have to be a model to look amazing in your senior portraits. With a few simple posing tips (and the right photographer to guide you), you’ll walk away with photos that feel authentic, confident, and completely you.
Whether you’re prepping for your own senior photo session or helping your teen get ready, here’s everything you need to know to look relaxed and natural on camera.
1. Don’t Overthink It — Move Naturally
One of the most common worries I hear before a session is: “I don’t know how to pose!” But you don’t need a modeling portfolio to show up like a pro. The key is subtle movement. Tiny shifts — adjusting your weight from one leg to the other, turning your chin slightly, dropping a shoulder — make a huge difference in the final image.
We’ll keep it simple during the shoot, and I’ll direct you the whole way. Your job is to show up and be yourself.
Many times, I will watch your movements in the moments my camera is down and catch you in a gorgeous pose. I’ll tell you so pause and we capture a very natural and “unposed” portrait.

2. Lean In, Not Back
When you lean away from the camera, it can flatten your features and feel stiff. Instead, lean slightly forward — especially with your face and shoulders. Think: engaged, confident, and approachable.
Try this in the mirror: sit or stand at a slight angle, then gently push your chin forward. It may feel weird, but it eliminates chin shadows and defines your jawline beautifully.

3. Use Your Hands (But Don’t Hide Them)
Hands can be the trickiest part to figure out. Where do they go? How do you avoid the “robot arm” look?
Some natural go-to’s:
- Pop a hand in your pocket
- Rest one hand lightly on your waist
- Touch your necklace or hair
- Cross your arms gently (not stiffly)
Hands give your photo energy, personality, and movement — as long as they’re relaxed and not clenched.

4. Seated Poses? Don’t Slouch
Seated poses can be powerful — if you do them right. Avoid sinking into the chair. Instead:
- Sit toward the edge
- Angle your body slightly (¾ view)
- Keep your back straight (imagine a string pulling your spine up)
- Cross your legs or point your front leg to elongate your frame
This creates gorgeous, confident lines and keeps you from looking squished or slouched.
5. Show Off Your Personality with Props
Posing isn’t just about body language — it’s also about the vibe. Props can help you feel more at ease and add meaning to your session.
Bring things that reflect your interests: sports gear, musical instruments, books, your pet… anything that tells your story.

6. Embrace Movement and Emotion
Some of the best shots aren’t posed at all — they’re candid. I’ll prompt you to walk, twirl, laugh, dance, and just move naturally during your session. These moments often turn into client favorites because they feel real.
Think less “picture-perfect” and more “personality on camera.”

7. Practice Makes Confidence
If you’re nervous, try practicing in the mirror. Try different expressions and angles. Figure out which side you prefer. If it feels silly — good! You’ll show up to your session feeling more prepared and confident.
Bonus: Choose a Photographer Who Guides You
