Photos in general can speak a thousand words. So your headshot needs to speak for you when someone sees it for the first time. Often times, when someone sees your headshot, it’s their first impression of who you are. You want to make it count and you want to stand out.
How do you stand out in a sea of people? Whether it’s for your own business or a career you’re going for, having a unique to you headshot can tell a person much about you.
Here are my top 3 headshot poses!
1. Add a prop
Headshots are usually focused waist or chest up. Bringing in a prop can show your audience quickly what your business represents. Look at the two headshot below and see if you can figure out what these ladies do for a living.

Adding a simple prop can quickly change your headshot up.
2. The Lean In
The lean in headshot sparks interest. It lets your audience say “Hey, they look ready for a conversation”. Using body language in your headshots to set the mood can easily change up the way people see your headshot.

The four different headshots above all show how leaning in to your shot can ease your target audience and show them you’re easy to talk to.
3. The Power Shot
Hands down the best headshot pose I ever added to my sessions. The power shot works for anyone and can be adapted to reflect power and confidence.

To create this pose, have one leg up higher than the other, ensure decency by bringing the leg over slightly or leaning over. Make triangles with your arms to create a more visually appealing photo. The photos above are all the exact same pose, however, it is adapted to the person I am photographing, what business they’re in and their personality.
You can change up your arm position, your expression or your lean to create a variety of pictures from this one pose.
Wrap Up
Standing out in a world full of faces means allowing your unique qualities to shine through in your headshot. Whether you’re adding for a prop to showcase your profession, leaning in to spark an inviting conversation, or striking a power pose to exude confidence, these simple tweaks can transform how others see you.
Your headshot serves as an introduction to your personal brand—so take the time to make sure it reflects the real you. Give these poses a try, and don’t be afraid to experiment with angles, expressions, and props until you find a look that speaks to your personality and goals. When your headshot authentically represents who you are, it becomes far more than just a photo—it becomes your calling card.
