Family Session FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

Planning a family photo session can feel like a lot — I totally get it. Between coordinating outfits, making sure everyone’s in a good mood, and finding the right photographer, it can be overwhelming. That’s why I’ve put together this Family Session FAQ to walk you through everything you need to know before your shoot.

Whether this is your first session or you’ve done this before, this guide will help you feel confident and prepared for your photos.

1. What should we wear?

Choose outfits that coordinate, not match. Think complementary colors, a mix of textures, and layers that bring personality and depth to your photos. Soft neutrals always photograph beautifully — but if your family loves color, lean into that!

For full sessions, we choose your outfits together during the consultation. OR if you want to use your photo session as a reason to go shopping, I am here for it! Check out local boutiques for your outfits. If you need help or have questions, I can either come shopping with you or you can send me pictures during your shopping trip.

2. Where do sessions take place?

We’ll work together to choose the perfect location for your session! Some families love nature-based locations like fields or parks (hello, golden hour glow!). Others prefer a more urban feel in downtown Greenville or Spartanburg. I’ve even done in-home sessions for a cozy, authentic vibe.

3. When should we schedule our family photos?

I recommend booking 1–2 months in advance, especially if you’re aiming for fall or holiday sessions — those dates go fast! For ideal lighting, we typically shoot during the golden hour (1–2 hours before sunset).

4. What if my kids don’t cooperate?

Totally normal — and no worries at all. I specialize in photographing families with young children and have plenty of tricks to keep things light and fun. I’m not expecting perfection. My job is to capture your connection, not perfectly posed smiles.

Many of my favorite shots come from in-between moments — real laughter, snuggles, and playfulness.

5. How long does a session last?

Most family sessions last about 45 minutes to an hour. That gives us plenty of time for a variety of groupings (whole family, siblings, individual portraits, etc.) without overwhelming little ones.

This also gives us the ability to stop for breaks with little ones. Sometimes they only last 5 minutes before the melt downs happen. That is completely normal. We shoot a few minutes then break to let the littles play. Don’t stress too much.

6. How do we prepare for the session?

Try to keep your schedule light the day of the session. Make sure everyone’s had a snack (or meal if needed), and bring water, a favorite toy for little ones, or anything that keeps the vibe positive. I’ll send a full prep guide once you book so you feel totally ready.

7. What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

If the weather looks questionable, I’ll be in touch the day before (or day of) to make the call. We can either reschedule or move to a backup indoor location if needed. I always keep a few buffer dates open for this reason — I’ve got you covered.

8. Can we bring pets?

Yes, please! I love when families include their furry companions. Just let me know in advance so I can help choose a pet-friendly location and bring extra treats.

9. Can we include grandparents or extended family?

Yes! Extended family sessions are available — just let me know when you inquire so I can price accordingly and plan for extra time and groupings.

10. Do you offer mini sessions?

I do offer mini sessions seasonally, especially around the holidays. Be sure to join my email list to get first dibs when those dates go live.
