7 Essential Pre-Photo Session Tips for a Successful Branding Session

professional hair and makeup for branding photo session with Taylor Johnson Photography

Your personal brand is a powerful tool—one that opens doors, forges connections, and communicates your unique personality to the world. As you gear up for a headshot or personal branding photo session, preparation can make all the difference between an “okay” photo and one that truly reflects your best self. From skincare and grooming tips, this pre-session guide will help you walk into your session with confidence, knowing you’ve checked all the boxes for a polished, camera-ready look. Let’s get started!

Pre-Photo Session Prep

1. Botox or Other Cosmetic Treatments

  • Schedule a few days ahead. If you’re planning on Botox or fillers, book them at least 2–3 days before your session. This helps minimize bruising and allows any swelling to go down.
  • Teeth whitening falls under this category. Don’t pull a Ross from friends though! Choose someone who is skilled and knowledgeable for this. Renee Foster is licensed and experienced in this service if it’s something you’re looking for.
  • Use your photo session as an excuse to treat yo self! Facials feel amazing and you get a bit of pampering. Speak with your esthetician about the order in which you do all your skin care.
  • Chemical peels and dermaplaning- please do this WELL in advanced.

2. Haircuts & Hair Styling

  • Avoid drastic changes right before. A fresh trim or shaping is great, but you don’t want to risk hating a dramatic new look. If you do want a big change, plan it at least a couple of weeks in advance so you have time to adjust (or correct, if needed). I had a client once who opted for an all new look. She hated almost every picture just because of her hair style and we tried everything to tame it during the session. A ruined hair style can make or break your session.

3. Tanning before your photo session

  • Practice makes perfect. If you want a sun-kissed glow, test out self-tanners weeks beforehand. This avoids any last-minute streaks or unwanted orange tones.
  • Professional spray tans can be a good option—just make sure you go a day or two before to let the color settle and even out.

4. Nails, Waxing & Grooming 2-3 days before your photo session

  • Nails: Get a fresh manicure in neutral, buff, or French tips. Your hands can sneak into headshots, especially for personal branding images.
  • Waxing: Schedule waxes 1–2 days before your session to reduce redness and bumps.
  • Brows and facial hair: If you shape your eyebrows or have facial hair, groom it a day or two in advance. This allows any irritation to subside.

5. Hydration & Rest the night Before your Photo Session

  • Drink water and get a good night’s sleep prior to your shoot. Hydration and rest do wonders for your skin and overall appearance.

6. Hair & Makeup Prior to Photo Session

  • Professional makeup. If possible, consider hiring a makeup artist who specializes in photography. They’ll know how to highlight your features without appearing washed out on camera. Camera-ready makeup is different and needs heavier application. (If you’re booked in with me, don’t worry, this is included in your session and you don’t have to stress!). I’ve had stories where clients didn’t like their photos just because their makeup didn’t really highlight their features the same way they were expecting.
  • Touch-ups. Bring oil-absorbing sheets or translucent powder to keep shine at bay, especially on the nose and forehead.

7. Confidence is King (or Queen!)

  • Relax and have fun. A positive, confident vibe shines through in photos.
  • Practice your smile and poses in the mirror. Yes, it might feel silly, but it can help you feel more prepared.

Final Thoughts before your Photo Session

Your headshot or brand photos are often the first impression potential clients, employers, or collaborators have of you—so make it count! Preparing in advance with well-timed grooming, and a dash of confidence will ensure you look and feel your best. Remember, the camera picks up your energy, so bring a relaxed mindset and let your personality shine.

Ready to rock your session? Follow these tips and come prepared to have fun and create stunning images that showcase your unique brand and style.
